ENGLISH In sync with the ongoing theme of the month-‘ Plants’, the students integrated their previous learning of flora and fauna and their importance to study a piece of persuasive writing, Chapter- ‘Rainforests in Danger’. They took it as a case study and learnt ‘Persuasive Writing’ as a way to spread awareness about saving the forests . Post reading, comprehending and the pre- writing activity, students individually prepared a leaflet, using their Persuasive Writing skill to convince others about the importance of preserving the rainforests. Using their understanding of Persuasive writing, students of Grade 5, in groups, prepared a Slogan and a Jingle (integrated with Music), about saving trees. With the English lessons abuzz with opportunities of ideating and implementing, the students expressed their emotions and feelings while learning to write Diary Entry. Their grammatical skills were honed through exposure of concepts of Clauses and Phrases. These activities were a part of the Language, Sst and Performing arts integration week (19th -23rd August ). MATH Reinforcement of the number operations concept was done through mental math questions (written / oral), practice sums and word problems. Students challenged themselves by solving multi-step word problems in class. The culmination of this whole concept was done by students, in groups, creating a mathematical game using the four number operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). It was heartening to see the students creatively expressing their understanding of the four operations by creating a board game, flashcards, quiz on Kahoot, PowerPoint presentation etc. Students shared their project with their peers in class. They had fun challenging each other by playing games created by their friends. They were assessed on their project and were marked on a rubric. They were also assessed on the number operation concept through a class assessment. As a way to enhance their logical – mathematical skills, they also attempted to solve puzzles using SEP module. SOCIAL SCIENCE As a part of project based learning, students of Grade 5 were divided into different groups. The task assigned to students was to research and find out about Greenland, Saudi Arabia, and DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo). The area of research was to get information about the climate, natural vegetation, wildlife, transportation, people and agriculture of these 3 countries. Students utilized various means of research – internet, people and books to find out the information. They completed their research work and collated the information as a PowerPoint presentation and A3 sheets. They presented their research work in class with their peers. Students were assessed on a rubric based on the content, body language, research work, team work. This was followed by the students watching related videos to understand about these three countries better. As a part of subject integration week, in sync with the theme of the month “Plants”, students of Grade 5 presented a MIME act (integrated with Drama) based on project HARIYALI, “Saving Trees”. It was a new concept for them, which they learnt in a short span of time and performed exceedingly well. They presented the act to create awareness for a green earth. Theme for the act was 'Save a tree Save a life'. This presentation was presented by them in a Special Assembly. SCIENCE Look deep into the nature and you will understand everything better. This is exactly the Grade V students did in the month of August. To deeply understand the process of growth and development, the students grew the seeds in the Science Lab. They not only loved watching them growing into tiny saplings but also understood that for a seed to achieve its greatest expression, it must come completely undone, the shell (testa) cracks, the inside comes out and everything changes. Every part of the plant plays a significant role in its growth. They visited the school kitchen garden to observed various stem modifications and were wondered to see the tendrils, tubers, stolons and bulbs. The students understood the role of the stem through a hands-on-activity in the Lab followed by observation in their note-books. Depending upon the presence of number of cotyledons the students did a sorting activity wherein they brought various seeds from their home and sorted them into two different categories i.e. Monocots and Dicots. While studying about the agriculture and crops, the students understood the importance of a scarecrow in protecting the ripened crop from birds. To add an element of fun in learning, the students made scary scarecrows and shared their importance with each other. They ended the theme by making attractive calligrams of plants. ROBOTICS UNIT TOPIC: ELECTRICITY –GENERATION AND ITS USE - MAKER SESSION Challenge : In this session, students were introduced to a problem statement with the help of some videos and images- What kind of solution can be possible to design and build an electric circuit to make an automatic door lock and which should work with the help of electricity. The main focus of maker session was to see what students can actually think of building after learning the basic concepts electricity and circuits. FRENCH In the month of August, students learnt about different animals (farm, domestic and wild animals), fruits & vegetables. They learnt how to pronounce the words in French building on their vocabulary. In Grammar, they studied the Adjectives with gender difference.
