ENGLISH The month of December was all about engaging students with a plethora of activities around literature, grammar, writing and consolidating their constructive learning. The literature text- Swifter, Higher, Stronger enabled them to research about Olympics, famous gold medalists and its relevance. Each small team did skim reading of the text, prepared a biographical sketch and presented it. They further inquired and studied about the Olympic winners from India too. In grammar, the students recapitulated the concept of Conjunctions and further brushed up the rules for each conjunction. It led to the application based activities in the Grammarite book and notebook. Taking forward the ritual of reading the NIE newspaper, the students discussed about a newspaper report, its pre requisites and format. Students discussed about various events of their school and practiced writing newspaper report. HINDI पाठ - अपना स्थान स्वयं बनाएं नामक पाठ छात्रों ने कौन बनेगा करोड़पति में कर्मवीर के रूप में सादर आमंत्रित पहली महिला इंजीनियर, सुविख्यात लेखिका, सच्ची समाजसेविका, सफल उद्योगपति और इंफोसिस कंपनी की संचालिका श्रीमती सुधा रायणमूर्ति के साक्षात्कार से किया । जिसके माध्यम से छात्रों ने जाना कि किस प्रकर परिश्रम पूर्वक अथक प्रयास सादा जीवन उच्च विचार के जीवनोपयोगी नैतिक-मूल्यों और आदर्शों का पालन करते हुए एक महिला ने न केवल भारतवर्ष में अपितु विश्वपटल पर अद्वितीय स्थान प्राप्तकर अपना स्थान स्वयं बनाएं नामक पाठ को भी सार्थक किया। परियोजनात्मक- शिक्षण (पी.बी.एल) के माध्यम से छात्रों ने श्रीमती सुधा नारायणमूर्ति के विषय में जानकारी प्राप्त कर संवाद विधा में अभिव्यक्त करते हुए (Visible learning) सचित्र प्रस्तुति दी। रचनात्मक कार्य के रूप में संवादलेखन और अनुच्छेदलेखन का अभ्यास छात्रों ने उत्साहपूर्वक किया । काव्यपाठ- दोहे (साहित्य और संगीत) से (Integrated) समायोजित कर काव्यपाठ गायन करते हुए वाचन सीखा । पद्यांशावबोधन और गद्यांशावबोधन का अभ्यास कक्षा में प्रश्नोतरी कार्य करते हुए पूर्ण किया । दोहवाली के माध्यम से छात्रों ने जहां काव्यविधा को समझा वहीं दोहों के माध्यम से जीवनोपयोगी मूल्यों को जाना और समझा। MATHEMATICS Students of Grade 5 continued to strengthen their understanding of decimal number operations – addition, subtraction and multiplication. They were also introduced to decimal division, where they learnt how to divide a decimal with a whole number and dividing by 10s, 100s and 1000s. It was a difficult concept for them. However, with practice they were able to grasp the concept and calculate correctly. They also attempted a class test on Decimal division. SOCIAL SCIENCE In the chapter, ‘Some people never die’, students of grade 5 discussed about Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King in class based on the research conducted by them. They also watched a video on Mother Teresa to learn more about her. They understood how these people worked for the betterment of the society and people. Making real-life connection with the present weather conditions, students started their inquiry into the Climate chapter. They were able to differentiate between weather and climate. They understood the different factors affecting climate :- distance from the equator, height above sea level, distance from the sea, winds and humidity through classroom discussions. SCIENCE Our Environment : It’s our collective and individual responsibility to preserve and tend to the world in which we live. Understanding and following the same, the students of Grade 5 voluntarily took part in various activities. JAM session was held in the class wherein the students shared their thoughts with the class on various terms related to the environment. A group discussion was held using Fish-bowl strategy. The facilitator introduced the topic and the selected group initiated the discussion. The outer bowl comprised of the listeners who raised questions to the inner bowl. The students enhanced their listening, speaking, questioning and reasoning skills. The students watched videos on Climate Activists- Greta Thunberg and Riddhima Pandey followed by discussion in the class. They pledged to keep the surroundings clean and also illustrated ‘India of My Dreams’ in their note-books. ICT The students progressed in Scratch and learned to make a variable, applying conditions in a program and changing the backdrop of the stage. By doing this, they grasped the usage of mathematical operators, variables and conditions in Scratch application. ROBOTICS UNIT TOPIC: PHOTOSYNTHESIS Activity 1: Process Tree In this session, students were explained about the process by which plants complete their nutrition. They were also explained about photosynthesis and components required for the process. They put all the components of plant food together to complete the structure of a tree and to find what is formed. They also understood and derived the relationship between food and photosynthesis. Activity 2: Stomata In this session, students were explained about the process of transportation in plants. They also explored the parts needed for transportation. They also studied about stomata and how it is responsible for the transportation of CO2 and O2 by making a visual representation. Through the model of stomata, they understood about open and close stomata and its function. FRENCH Students revised the concepts done in class and attempted their UT2. The topic ‘Seasons and Festivals’ was introduced. They learnt about different festivals celebrated in France and also made a poster of seasons. They also understood how to describe the weather related to the seasons. SPANISH The theme “Seasons and Festivals” was introduced with a video on Seasons and Weather. The students learnt the related words and names of seasons of the year and weather, followed by the vocabulary writing in their notebooks. Practice was done in class by describing pictures that were shown of different seasons. Question & answer on the topic was done like Qué tiempo hace What is the weather like? and Cuál es la estación What is the season? Considering the proximity of Christmas, students enjoyed making Christmas cards in Spanish. GERMAN Students revised the concepts done so far and attempted their UT 2. The topic ‘Seasons and Festivals’ was introduced and students learnt about the different festivals celebrated in Germany. Students also conversed with each other on the topic ‘weather’ with their peers to enhance their communication skills. They also wrote a few lines on their most favoured weather in German. SANSKRIT लट्लकार, शब्दरूप - अकारांत , आकारांत की पुनरावृति के साथ पाठ-१२,१३,१४ आधारित धातुरूपों की तालिका निर्माण करते हुए संभाषण कार्य सीखा । संस्कृत में अनुवाद का अभ्यास छात्रों ने उत्साहपूर्वक किया । संवादविधा के लिए किए गए प्रयास प्रशंसनीय रहे । जिसके माध्यम से छात्रों ने संस्कृत को सीखने के प्रति उत्साह दिखाया। LIFE SKILLS Students are making a booklet “Inside-out” which includes 5 to 6 pages. Students learnt coping skills for sadness. Students illustrated it in creative way “Turn me upside down”. Students learnt different strategies to divert their attention when the mood is upset. Distraction is a surprisingly effective technique for changing our mood. When we realize that we have become upset, we shall choose to interrupt our negative mood by engaging in something that distracts us from what has upset us. INDIAN MUSIC In the month of December, the students learnt: Name of the song: Prayer song “Itni shakti hamai dena data”, “Vandna” for their assembly. Sloka chanting ‘Saraswati maha bhagye’. Instruments played: Combination of Harmonium, Tabla, Tanpura, Markas, Swartarang. Exercises done: Vocal warm up with sargam in different scales. WESTERN MUSIC In the month of December, the students learnt : Song taught: “Mary’s boy child” (Christmas carol) Exercises done: finger warm up exercise in c major scale (in guitar) Instruments taught: G major progression chords DANCE All Students learnt the basics of Indian classical (Kathak) and freestyle dance form. They learnt how to emote different gestures, posture through body language and facial expressions. They also learnt guru vandana, tatkaar , Hastak in kathak dance form. To learn about expressions they practised Navras- nine emotions of dance. For more understanding of rhythm, they learnt about teen taal (16beats)as all Kathak basics are on teen taal. Apart from that, they have learnt the choreography on Christmas song by the name “We Wish You A Merry Christmas(funk version)”. DRAMA Body language plays a crucial role in drama and one act plays. Students not only understood how to work as a team in theatre but also learnt how to portray the character assigned to them. They built confidence with their body language and learnt how to present themselves as charismatic and confident characters. ART & POTTERY Clay captivates a child’s interest for hours, and it has a calming effect too. Carol Singing Competition The students participated in the Inter House Carol Singing Competition with great zeal and enthusiasm. They enjoyed the journey of learning new carols, rehearsals and performances . The event also built in room for collaboration across grades as was evident during the practices . School Excursion - Visit to Jaipur Education is an enlightenment of oneself to achieve maximum benefit. There are different ways to provide a holistic learning environment and conducting educational tours is among the most creative and alive ways. Grade 5-7 students of Suncity School 37 Gurugram traveled to Jaipur - the pink city for hands-on interactive learning. They headed for the Bhamashah Techo Hub, a platform where they were awed by what they saw Latest technologies startup opportunities, a digital museum and a tinkering lab for the development of products in an adaptive learning environment. The students explored the VR and AR technology through interesting games and challenges in the museum. Their curiosity and excitement saw no bounds during the interaction round. In the evening, they visited Chowkidhani and participated in workshops led by master craft persons, saw live performances of traditional music and dance, relished local delicacies, enjoyed rides and traditional games, and got in-depth information about the battle of Haldighati. .The Kalagram was a platform for local artisans and the students made sure to visit the shops got souvenir shopping. The visit to Jantar Mantar was a treat and a window to the contribution made by Indians in the field of Astronomy. A tourist guide took the students through the collection of various architectural astronomical instruments like Sunclocks, Sundial built by the Kachwaha Rajput king Sawai Jai Singh II the founder of Jaipur. The session was quite interactive and informative. The next destination was the very famous architectural marvel, Hawa Mahal which was mesmerizing. Its unique five floors exterior akin to the honeycomb of a beehive with its 953 small windows called Jharokhas decorated with intricate latticework was worth watching. Just wandering around through Jaipur's tiny streets and alleyways was fun in itself. On the way back, the students had an interactive historical session about the Amber Fort and Jal Mahal as the drive past destinations. The journey enabled the students to explore the impressions of Rajput rule through its history, architecture, cultural heritage, cuisine, handicrafts, and warm hospitality. The core objective of enabling students to learn skills like time self-management, becoming independent, handling money and effective communication was achieved when they all reached home with memories of their visit and learning, happy and wanting for more.
