INVESTITURE CEREMONY Suncity School believes that the child centric approach will frame a responsible citizen. Keeping up with this thought in mind, The Suncity School, Sec 37 D, Gurugram held its first Investiture ceremony for the academic session 2019-20 on the 30th of August 2019. Ms. Rupa Chakravorty – Director Suncity Schools presided over the event as the chief guest. To inculcate the leadership qualities in the students and to give them a feel of functioning of the administrative body, a school council board was formed through democratic nominations followed by scrutinous interviewing and voting. The students’ council took the pledge to uphold the standards and ideals of Suncity School with high esteem. The ceremony was held with lots of zeal and zest. ENGLISH The students undertook a project work of Travel Brochure making, post the reading and comprehension of the chapter –Holiday Destination. The class took this chapter (about Sri Lanka) as a case study to design their own brochures for different countries and worked in small teams . They studied the pattern, format, need and various requisites of a brochure. This was followed by class presentation by each team. The students further explored the animal tales through the chapter – The Hare and the Tortoise. This was in sync with the ongoing theme of the month- Animals. The students explored the story through role play , their opinion about the attitude of the characters and building on the vocabulary. Further, word work, practice exercises and written comprehension tasks were done by the students. In writing, students analyzed the format of Paragraph Writing and attempted to write on a topic with the help of an exemplar. In Grammar, a recapitulation of the topic Subject, Predicate and types of sentences was done through a Quiz. To build on it, the concept of Phrases and Clauses was introduced . HINDI (कविता - भिक्षापात्र) का पाठवाचन, कठिन शब्दार्थ और जीवनोपयोगी सीख का छात्रों से परिचय कराना। आशय स्पष्टीकरण करते हुए गद्यांशावबोधन विधा सीखी। गतिविधि के रूप में कविता का छात्रों ने चित्रांकन कर स्वरचित काव्यपंक्तियों की रचना की। विराम चिह्न नामक विषयवस्तु को विभिन्न गतिविधियों एवं चित्रावली विधा में समझकर वाक्य प्रयोग कराया गया। वचन नामक विषयवस्तु को उदाहरणों व नियमों सहित सीखा। पाठ के स्पष्टीकरण के साथ गद्यांशावबोधन सिखाया । विशेषतः प्रथम इकाई के पाठ्यक्रम की लिखित व मौखिक पुनरावृत्ति कराई गई। MATH On joining back school, students revised the lessons already done and prepared for the Math unit test. A recap of all the concepts was done again to strengthen their understanding of Number System . As a prior knowledge assessment, students were grouped and were given a set of key words that they had to sort according to the number operations. In the second activity, students were given set of questions related to number operations to assess how many sums were they able to solve. This laid the foundation for planning the whole concept. Further, Math lessons saw the students practicing sums related to Number Operations and solving word problems using RUCSAC method. SOCIAL SCIENCE After the vacations, a doubt session on the chapters -The British Raj and the First War of Independence, The Struggle for Independence and Gandhiji Leads the Nation, was done. Also , students presented their holiday homework in class with explanation. With the help of a PowerPoint presentation, the concept of endangered and extinct species, was discussed with students. Also poaching and hunting of animals was explained to students along with disadvantages of hunting. They were also shown their understanding on the reflection sheet provided. Students discussed in groups on various National Parks and diversities available nearby and in the country. They also marked Biodiversity and National Parks on map. SCIENCE Our world is so beautiful and so are its creatures. The students of grade V (based on the monthly theme: Animals) studied about the 5 Kingdom Classification and could easily sort the living beings into 5 groups. They depicted the 5 kingdoms on the hand print cut-out using A-4 size colourful sheets. Their learning was bolstered through observation of mounted slides of kingdom Protista, Monera/Bacteria and Fungi. It was really a See-Think-Wonder time. They were astonished to see the unicellular microscopic organisms. Their understanding of the concept was assessed through ‘A Stick-on at Right Place’ activity. The students assessed their learning themselves through a reflection form in the form of red, yellow and green zones. The best part of the reflection was peer learning where students clarified each other’s doubts. VISUAL ART Children made a poster on ‘Save Tiger’ campaign. First, they drew the poster on white paper and coloured it with oil pastels. While drawing they were explained the step by step method of drawing of animal figures and other natural elements like jungle and landscape. In pottery class they made figures of elephant and tiger . They made different body parts separately and assembled them. GERMAN The excitement was prevailing all over when the children came back after relaxing and enjoyable holidays. Children did excellent job in completing their Holiday Homework. The young learners were thrilled to take their first ever foreign language test. After the UT, the theme for the month, Animals, was introduced to the children through the medium of a funny video of animals and their sounds in German language . The concept was more clear to the students after the vocabulary along with some describing words(adjectives) were given to the them. They thoroughly enjoyed the activity of making the Pet ID tag, and also tried to frame simple sentences and describe their pets. FRENCH After the summer vacation, children were comfortable using basic words in and outside the classroom. They were able to greet formally and informally in French. They also had their first French UT which was done in a smooth way. Children were introduced to names of animals under the wild, domestic and farm animals according to the monthly theme. The verb 'habiter' was introduced in accordance with -er verb. An activity of making pet tag was also done. SPANISH The theme “Animales”was introduced through a video on Animals sounds. Then through a PPT. the students learned some “animales de la granja” farm animals, “animals salvajes”, wild animals and “animales domésticos” domestic animals. New adjectives were introduced to describe different types of animals, like “lindo”, cute, “peludo” shaggy and others. Also, the class did a recap of adjectives of colours to form more attractive sentences. Gender and number agreement was discussed in the class with the help of the PPT. The students were able to choose and describe the animals of their preference using the colors and the new adjectives. WESTERN MUSIC Children wrote a poetry about Saving Tiger related to the theme and composed a song with the help of guitar and practiced in a proper way .Vocal warm up exercises , breathing and controlling exercises were done along with the piano.Students are continuously practicing vocal warm up exercises to improve their singing . INDIAN MUSIC Students are practicing vocal warm up exercises to improve there singing .They started their class with सरगम in rhythm so they can understand about scale and important factors of rhythm in classical music. They practiced a song “ जाग रहे हम वीर जवान '' a beautiful poem by Raam Dhani Singh Dinker ji in the form of song. Students learned about classical instruments and classification of Indian music instruments like स्वरतरंग, हारमोनियम . PERFORMING ARTS - DRAMA StudentS learnt about movements of animals, its appearance, gestures and body language based on the animal character which was in sync with the theme - Animals. The students also learnt how to do story narration and practiced how to modulate their voice in their drama lessons. They rehearsed how to perform on stage with confidence, how to maintain voice and body movement to justify the role. ICT The students extended their knowledge of using PowerPoint by organizing and rearranging the slides, using Word Art, editing the images and text and changing the slide layouts. They prepared presentations based on the theme and added animation and transition to the presentations by including all the features of PowerPoint ROBOTICS UNIT TOPIC: ELECTRICITY –GENERATION AND ITS USE In this session, the students explored about electricity, types of circuit and also about current, voltage and its unit. They also studied about different modes of communication with the help of electricity, studied about Mohr’s code and how to decode it. In order to understand it, they built a telegraph out of snap circuit kit to understand electrical energy and its role in communication. They also learnt about properties of magnet. They made an electromagnet by wrapping a coil of copper wire around an iron nail and investigating that whether a number of coils changes the electromagnet’s strength. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Students were introduced to the game of Basketball. They were made to understand the basic rules of the game and the markings on the Basketball courts. The focus was to make sure everybody becomes familiar with the ball and could do basic ball handling exercises. Students were also Introduced to stationary dribbling and dribbling on the move. LIFE SKILLS Students were able to understand that their real friends don’t care what they look like. They like them because of who they are and not by looks. It’s not important to please everyone around us. Understanding and valuing their own self and being proud of themselves was the core learning in this month Life skill session. Students learnt strategies to cope how to handle a situation when they are teased and learn to deal it wisely so that it doesn’t affect them negatively. As the theme of the month was animals, this concept was thought through a problem faced by a tortoise in a zoo. This was followed by students writing their thoughts in a reflection sheet. CLASS ASSEMBLY The Suncitizens of Grade V conducted a special assembly on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas in honour of the soldiers and enthralled the audience with their power packed musical performance. They instilled a sense of pride and respect for the soldiers in every spectator by sharing the anecdotes of their valor.
