ENGLISH During the month of November, the students became familiar with yet another informational text – Growing a City. They could make associations with such similar texts done this year. The students enthusiastically gave their inputs about Dubai. They focused on understanding the details of informational text and attempted comprehension questions along with sharing their previous knowledge. In grammar, the topic of similes and metaphors was taken up where they to identify and differentiate them. They learnt to use the tool of simile and metaphor to make their writing piece interesting. They also shared their previous knowledge about adverbs to understand and apply adverbial phrases. In Writing, they learnt to write newspaper report. They referred NIE newspaper and followed the format too. They applied their previous learning of brochure making after the visit to Anandgram. हिंदी - पाठ -अब्राहम लिंकन के माध्यम से छात्रों ने जाना कि टूटी-फूटी झोपड़ी में रहने वाला अत्यधिक गरीब परिवार का बच्चा कैसे विश्व के सबसे ताकतवर देश अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति पद पर अपनी मेहनत और लगन से पहुँच गया। छात्रों ने उन जीवनोपयोगी नैतिक-मूल्यों और परिश्रम पूर्वक अध्ययन करने के संबंध में जानकारी प्राप्त की जिनके कारण वह केवल अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति ही नहीं बल्कि जन - जन का मसीहा भी बन गए थे । परियोजनात्मक-शिक्षण (पी.बी.एल) के माध्यम से छात्रों ने भारत और अमेरिका के प्रथम-राष्ट्रपति, वर्तमान-राष्ट्रपति और प्रसिद्ध-राष्ट्रपतियों के विषय में जानकारी प्राप्त कर संवाद विधा में अभिव्यक्त करते हुए प्रस्तुति दी। पाठ - रक्त की कहानी; को दृश्यात्मकाधिगम (Visible learning) (विज्ञानविषय से समायोजित) करते हुए समझा और गद्यांशावबोधन का अभ्यास कक्षा में प्रश्नोतरी कार्य पूर्ण किया । कविता - हमारी नाव चल का काव्यपाठ गायन करते हुए वाचन सीखा । उपर्युक्त कविता के माध्यम से छात्रों ने समझा कि सभ्यता के विकास के साथ जब नदी पार करने की आवश्यकता हुई तो किस प्रकार नाव का निर्माण के हुआ । MATH Students strengthened their understanding on the fraction concepts – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of like and unlike fractions. They understood the meaning of reciprocal and practiced sums and word problems on all the fraction concepts done so far. They were introduced to Decimals through a class discussion ‘quick talk’ strategy. They also watched a video to understand the difference between whole number and decimals. They also learnt about place value of decimals, fraction to decimal conversion and vice-versa, ordering & comparing of decimals, addition, subtraction and multiplication of decimals. They practice sums and word problems and revised for the 2nd unit test. . As part of the Math Science and Visual art integration week, students understood that the subjects are not stand-alone, but transdisciplinary. A whole lot of activities were planned and the students participated with enthusiasm. SOCIAL STUDIES As a part of Project-Based Learning, students researched and collected different facts related to modern means of transport and submitted their activities in class. They discussed the invention of the wheel, steam engines and different modern means of transport like roadways, railways, waterways and airways. They suggested different ways to solve the problems of increasing traffic. To introduce the monthly theme a video was shown to them related to the importance of Air and Water. They also discussed the development of civilization near water resources. In sync with the present scenario of Gurgaon city related to environmental conditions a discussion was held on the topic ‘Conserving Our Environment’. A video was shown to them followed by a talk show on ‘Pollution’. They also suggested a few ideas related to waste generation and disposal and how to reduce waste. As a part of the activity, they made attractive posters with catchy slogans to reduce pollution. SCIENCE Air, Water and Weather Grade 5 students enhanced their basic understanding of the properties of air and water through various engaging activities. They made 3D models of layers of the atmosphere. While discussion about the importance of various layers, they appreciated the presence of the ozone layer and talked about the reason for its depletion. They learnt about the purification of water through hands-on experience of Sedimentation, Decantation and Filtration in the Science Lab. They loved ‘Ice cube’ and ‘Walking Water’ activity about the properties of water. ICT In progression of Scratch 2.0 programming language, the students prepared several small programs such as take the input from the user and find its length, use of mathematical operators to compare digits. They also learnt how to create new variables and list. They also practiced several small programs given in the ‘lab session’ of the ‘Cyber Beans’ text book. Robotics UNIT TOPIC: DAREDEVIL ROLLER COASTER FUN - RUN A MARBLE Activity: Jump the marble In this session, students were explained about jump (a ball that can jump over a gap and land on the other side and continue on its way). To establish a correlation between momentum and distance to be jumped by the marble in the roller coaster they followed a design process to plan, build and investigate a ‘Roller Coaster Marble Run Track’ with a foam pipe insulation that has a jump. Sanskrit संस्कृत लट्लकार, शब्दरूप - अकारांत , आकारांत , पाठ-७ सर्वनाम शब्दरूपों का प्रथमा विभक्ति में तालिका निर्माण करते हुए और पाठ-८ अव्ययपदा: के माध्यम से संभाषण कार्य सीखा । चित्रावली और मूकाभिनय के द्वारा पशुपक्षियों के संस्कृतनामों का अभ्यास किया गया । जिसमें छात्रों ने उत्साहपूर्वक भाग लिया । संस्कृत में अनुवाद का अभ्यास कराया जा रहा है। Spanish The theme Air and water “Aire y agua” was presented with a PPT. The students learnt the complete conjugation of new two verbs “Viajar” to travel and “Respirar” to breathe. Application and usage of the verbs learnt was done by writing few sentences. With “Viajar, the students learnt also some means of transport. Students watched a PPT and were able to translate sentence on famous English – Spanish TV cartoon character Dora, related to pollution. This was followed by a class discussion on how to frame sentences using negation. Students also learnt basic vocabulary related to sources of water and use of water at home. The verbs “Lavar” to wash were introduced and recap of the verb “Beber” to drink was done in the class. German Students of Grade 5 learnt about their daily routine in German. The reflection of which was being carried out in class by students speaking about it in class on the topic. They thoroughly enjoyed watching a PPT on ‘Air and Water’ that included lot of new vocabulary, new verbs like ‘atmen- to breathe’ and ‘fahren- to travel’, uses & sources of water. They also did an activity of making a collage on ‘Air and water’ using resources from old magazines and newspaper. French In the month of November, students were introduced to nationalities along with countries and the languages. They also learnt new vocabulary related to different means of transport and communication. A quick recap of articles was done with supporting worksheets. Students learnt to associate the flags and the country it belongs to as a class activity. Physical Education CHESS : Understood the role and movement of pieces BODILY KINESTHETICS : 75 m race and Relay race Dance The students learnt the basics of Indian classical (Kathak), semi-classical and western dance form. They learnt how to emote different gestures, posture through body language and facial expressions. They also learnt Guru Vandana, Tatkaar (basic footwork), Hastak (basic hand-movements) of kathak. For more understanding of rhythm, they learnt ‘teen taal’ (16 beats) as all Kathak basics are on ‘teen taal’. Apart from that, they have learnt the choreography on Christmas song ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’. (Funky version) Drama Students understood how to work as a team in a dramatics lesson. They understood the various parts of comedy plays and one-acts. Also, they understood how to portray comic characters in one-act plays focusing on acting techniques, body language, observational skills, voice modulation, diction and speech. Indian Music In the month of November, the students enhanced their singing and instrumental skills through the following songs and instruments. Name of the song: Prayer song :Vandana k in Swaro mai and ‘Humko Man ki Shakti’ Instruments played: Combination of Harmonium, Tabla, Tanpura, Markas and Swartarang. Exercises: Vocal warm-up with sargam Western Music In the month of November, the students learnt: Name of the song: “Let it be” by the Beatles : “Feliz Navidad” Christmas carol (Spanish version) Instruments played: G major progression chords Exercises done: finger warm up exercise in c major scale (in guitar) Art and Pottery The students drew marine life. They drew all the prominent sea animals of their own choice . They coloured their compositions with acrylic and poster colours. In clay modelling class they made fish and boat using clay slabs. Fist the drew fish and boats on slabs and cut them in the shapes and coloured them with acrylic colours. Life Skills Students are making a booklet “Inside-out” which includes 5 to 6 pages. Students learnt about different emotions interlinked with each other, they had also drawn and coloured different emoji’s illustrating different emotions in the month of October. For this month students learned how to control sadness (coping skills). These coping skills included little things that we can do when we are sad like – talk to someone you trust, hug soft toy, write it down, go for walk, be in sunlight for some time. Field Trip -ANANDGRAM SANSKRITI MUSEUM OF TERRACOTTA, ART & TEXTILES With the aim to sensitize young Suncitizens and to bring about an understanding and awareness of the creative vivacity of the Indian culture and heritage all in sync with Science, Maths and Visual Art integration week, the students visited Anandgram -A Terracotta Museum. The campus itself is a welcome sight with a serene ambience. The students were greeted at the museum gate and were directed towards the Terracotta Museum. They were introduced to the soil/mud/clay from various states of India where Terracotta is prevalent. Students were made aware of the various regions where terracotta flourished, history of terracotta and the states of India where it is still practised. The students came across a map depicting the region that had developed terracotta art and given its own flavour to it. They loved the animal figures, human figures, deities and various everyday use articles like pitchers and stands displayed in terracotta. The museum of everyday art has articles for everyday use, but art being an integral part of each piece. Students came across furniture pieces, kitchen items, hookahs, home temples, deities, scales, kids’ items while visiting this mini-museum. They were arranged in the chronological order as human life progresses from a baby to an adult. Beginning with the things used by children, followed by student items, householder’s items, Shringar or beauty related items. And finally, the articles used in a devotional pursuit. At the end of their visit, the students entered the textile museum where various textiles gamut like silks, weaves, embroideries, stitches, colours, and prints have been displayed. The Saris from various places have been artistically displayed in glass panels. The visit provided an enriching and engaging experience to the students. This outing helped them to connect with the rich culture and heritage of the country which was evidently visible in the collaborative reflection sheets filled in by the students in groups on their return.
